I've recently completed a 28 day Business Alchemy programme with the UK's Dragon's Den - Rachel Elnaugh. Amongst the many interesting elements I learnt, something that stood out to me was the mirrored reflection of Universe flow within our own selves. Let me explain what I mean.
There is a natural cycle to all things; life and death, our breath, the seasons and our ocean's tides. They all happen without our knowing, forcing or planning; their movement just happens like some magical, unseen machine that operates silently behind the scenes. Just take a moment to notice your breath. Did you have to make that breath happen or did it just rise and fall and then followed by the next breath? Unless, of course, we have a lung condition, we rarely ever have to worry about where the next breath comes from, it just flows naturally and instinctively.
The same is true of our seasons. Just in the last week I have noticed the subtle shift as we move effortlessly from a warming summer into the mellow fruitfulness of Autumn here in UK. I can't quite articulate the change, although it's there none the less; the air feels different, the bird song has changed track and the feel of the early morning due against my feet has a definite autumnal feel to it. When did that shift happen? I didn't spot it - just the natural flow of the seasons transmuting from one to another without any influence from the human race. How incredible. This got me thinking. If all this happens without our input, then are there the same subtle shifts within ourselves that are going on without our direct influence?
Every river flows from its source to the sea, meandering through mountains, fields and forest. Obstacles change its shape and course from rocks and rapids to waterfalls, twists and turns, although it always reaches its destination. Perhaps we are the same and have the same ebbs and flows. What if we tuned into that energy and came to realise that our lives are a combination of seasons and bends in the river that are all feeding us in some way, preparing us for the movement into the next phase of our life.
I love the notion that there are periods of our lives that are like the seasons; times when nothing seems to be shifting, there's no action, we feel low, things seem to be stagnant and need effort to move. We get frustrated and annoyed, feeling like we need to give ourselves a kick up the backside! Perhaps this is just our Winter, giving us a chance to hibernate, rest and slow down the perpetual rhythm of our chaotic lives. After all Winter has a key role, preparing its community for the frenetic pace of Spring. A time of regeneration, stillness and reflection, ready for the freshness that only the arrival of Spring can bring.
Perhaps you are feeling a real 'Spring in your step', waking early with the desire to get on with things, feeling creative in your job or with the kids. You feel the excitement of the weekend's arrival, even amidst the busy-ness of your day-to-day life - it has a different flow. The children are getting on, the family harmony, just for a moment, bounces rather than feeling like a war-zone. Spring is the time for creativity, making plans, coming up with new ideas, planting the seeds for an Autumn fruition and things begin moving again.
Summer is that period of abundance, joy and playfulness. There is a freedom in your heart and soul that is difficult to compute. The energy in the house, garden and office just feels different to you. And then there might be an Autumn feel to your life, where you harvest, gather, retreat and there feels like a change is on the horizon.
Exercise - Timeline of Seasonal Flow. Inspired by Rachel's wisdom, I carried out an exercise, which was so interesting to see the flow of my life through the decades and I called it the Timeline of Seasonal Flow. Take a piece of A4 paper and look back over your life drawing a decade by decade timeline. Track the events, the feelings and the ebbs and flows that you experienced during those times. Where did things bounce and flow, sleep and restore or feel harsh and perishing? Notice that each period eventually changed and shifted into another phase. It may not have been a day or a week, although it did change.
The Universe has a natural order of things and a flow that weaves through its inhabitants' lives invisibly. Intrinsically linked, our bodies are affected by the same flows of energy and things are always on the change. May be if we took time to examine what season we are experiencing right now, it would help us trust that this too will pass and that just around the corner a new season beckons. Each one has its treasures, passage of play and rules and if only we could learn to acknowledge it, embrace it, surrender to its process and honour it, how much easier our existence could be. Trusting in the knowledge that all things pass and a new experience awaits us, when we are ready to make the transition. It may not be now, although it will come.
The Universe has a power and strength that we can learn from and its expanse and energy flow has a mirrored existence within each one of us. Let go of the fight and resistance, just enjoy what the season has in store for you and embrace its gifts. When I looked back at my Timeline, I understood and accepted its twists and turns and it helped me trust the natural movement of the Universe, my life, my well-being and that all is, as it is meant to be.
Be well and happy.
